R.J. Cyler Has Been Cast as the Blue Ranger in Lionsgate's 'Power Rangers' Movie

I actually wasn’t aware that a new “Power Rangers” movie was in the works; but maybe you guys were. Not that I’m exactly looking forward to it (I’m not), but *big* news like this rarely escapes me.

All that said, yes, Lionsgate has put into development a new “Power Rangers” movie that’s set for a 2017 release. The project is currently being cast, with Ludi Lin (as the Black Ranger), Naomi Scott (the Pink Ranger), Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger), and, announced today, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” co-star, R.J. Cyler, has been cast as the Blue Ranger.

Dean Israelite, whose previous work includes “Project Almanac,” is on board to direct the film, promising a “mature but still playful” take on the television series, which was centered around a team of youths recruited and trained by a mentor to morph into the eponymous Power Rangers, able to utilize special powers and pilot immense assault machines, called Zords, to overcome the periodic antagonists.

I recall the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” movie released in 1995 American, which was produced by Saban Entertainment, and was distributed by 20th Century Fox. Much like the television season that followed the release, it used concepts from the Japanese “Ninja Sentai Kakuranger” series. The film received mixed reviews, and grossed $38 million theatrically in the U.S. and $66,433,194 worldwide.

Filming is scheduled to begin on January 18, 2016 in Vancouver.

Lionsgate’s “Power Rangers” hits theaters on January 13, 2017.
