The 31st annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Johnny Depp for his portrayal of gangster and FBI informant Whitey Bulger in “Black Mass” with their Modern Master Award. (The award has been re-named the Maltin Modern Master Award to spotlight the 25-year moderator of tribute.)
Johnny Depp has nabbed three Oscar noms, for “Finding Neverland,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” but has never secured an Oscar win. Depp has a shot at his first Best Actor trophy for his well-reviewed performance in Scott Cooper’s “Black Mass,” which has grossed a respectable $62 million to date. But the 2016 Best Actor field is competitive, and Depp plays a hardboiled gangster with creepy blue eyes who kills his victims with his bare hands. Yes, it’s a change of pace and a welcome comeback, and he is effectively frightening. But his nomination is not entirely secure.
