Academy Deems 74 Film Songs Eligible for Oscar Contention, from 'Anomalisa' to 'Youth'

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s Music Branch applies strict criteria when deeming an Original Song eligible for the Oscars. For example, a maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film: “To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.  A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.”
During the nominations process, the Academy sends the Music Branch voters a Reminder List of song submissions and a DVD copy of the song clips. Members can watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for the top five; the ones with the highest number of votes will become the final five nominees announced on January 14.

Or they can go to one of many Music Branch parties with artists performing the songs, one of which I attended last week for “Fifty Shades of Grey,” with The Weeknd memorably crooning the very sexy “Earned It.” Alas Golden-Globe nominated “One Kind of Love” (Brian Wilson, Scott Bennett) from “Love & Mercy” didn’t make the cut, so we won’t see Brian Wilson perform it on the Academy Awards Show.

74 songs from eligible feature-length motion pictures released in 2015 are in contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 88th Academy Awards.
