ABC Family, which, in a rebranding effort, will change its name to Freeform in January, 2016, has announced the cast for its upcoming Nicki Minaj sitcom based on the rapper’s pre-teen years in New York City.

Ariana Neal (“Get Hard,” “Fruitvale Station”) has been cast as a young Minaj; Selita Ebanks will play Grace, Nicki’s mom; Wesley Jonathan will be Vincent, Nicki’s father; and McCarrie McCausland (“Army Wives,” “The Originals”) will play Jaylen, Nicki’s older brother.

Also Whoopi Goldberg has booked a recurring role as Nicki’s neighbor, Miss Martha.

Kate Angelo scripted the pilot and will also write and executive produce the series.

Tim Story will direct.

Nicki Minaj will executive produce the new scripted comedy series for Freeform, that she will also appear in, likely in a guest-starring role.

The comedy will shoot in her hometown of Queens, New York this winter.

The half-hour series is based on Minaj and her family’s immigration from Trinidad in the early 1990’s. It will focus on her growing up in Queens with her vibrant family and the personal and musical evolution that led to her eventual rise to stardom.

“This is one of the more unique adventures I’ve ever embarked on,” said Minaj. “I couldn’t be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special.”
