U.K. critics and audiences have been raving about “London Spy,” which stars Ben Whishaw as a gregarious club kids who falls in love with an investment banker named Alex (Edward Holcroft)—and then finds himself embroiled in a dangerous situation when Alex goes missing. Not everyone’s been so enamored, though: some viewers were apparently shocked by the first episode’s gay sex scene, which included “metal sex toys, bondage gear, and a sex dungeon,” per the tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail. (Consider us duly intrigued.)
Along the way, Whishaw’s naive Danny seeks guidance from his mentor, Scottie (Jim Broadbent) and encounters Frances (Charlotte Rampling), a mysterious figure from Alex’s life, a journey that tests his belief in intimacy and the solidity of identity.
The five-part series, written by Tom Rob Smith (“Child 44”) and directed by Jakob Verbruggen (“The Fall”), premieres on BBC America January 21.
