Oscar Visual Effects Shortlist of 20 Includes ‘Star Wars’ Sequel

Oscar Visual Effects Shortlist of 20 Includes 'Star Wars' Sequel

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee voted on the shortlist of 20, which is newly expanded. That helped to get “Ex Machina” and “Bridge of Spies” into this year’s initial list which will be whittled down to 10 before the VFX Oscar bakeoff. That will determine the final five announced on nominations morning January 14.

Box office flop “Pan” is the only significant omission on the big-budget VFX-heavy side. “Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens,” which has not screened in its entirety, is included. This first list deems it eligible. The committee will see the film before they pick the bakeoff list of ten.

Frontrunners include “Ant Man,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Jurassic World,” “Force Awakens,” and “The Martian,” per Bill Desowitz, but I would add “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:
    “Ant-Man”
    “Avengers: Age of Ultron”
    “Bridge of Spies”
    “Chappie”
    “Everest”
    “Ex Machina”

    “Spectre”
