Screen Talk: Status Update on Awards Race, Top 10 Lists

Eric Kohn and I share three films on our respective ten best lists, and amazingly, have the same number one! We’ll be posting our lists soon. We start off assessing who comes out ahead and behind after the Gotham Awards, Oscar Doc Shortlist, National Board of Review, and New York Film Critics Circle.

As someone who followed Anne from the In Contention Podcast to Screen Talk, I am really grateful for you two sitting down and doing this every week. Your conversation is so enjoyable, and so informative, it feels like I’m right in the middle. Excited to follow you two through the rest of the awards season. And great lists – inspired me to seek out Tangerine tonight, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Indeed it was the use of the word sh t that shut down indiewire, preventing me to use such a naughty word, sighting it as spammy. Thois does not bode well for adults writing to other adults. Especially on a cultural criticism blog. Hence, I will take my Disneyification with a shot of Bailey’s and a hit of Talwin. All good noewwwdb m l

There are moments in the movie where she is depicted trying to inject herself that left me in horror; her technique made no sense, and would insure that the injection would miss, boil up, fester and probably get infected. And all that suffering for no high to speak of! This "actress" is an actress, but a bad actress.

People who are my close friends refer to me as a small time David Carr. I had/have a Masters Degree in Linguistics from the University of Toronto and taught first year English and Film Theory at another Canadian University. I have admired and read Anne Thompson since the first issue of Premiere (all of which I have), and encouraged my students to read that magazine because of her, Hoberman, Kenney and others.

Unfortunately I married the road that David Carr eventually divorced. And I am the lesser for it. But wiser in one area. And when I say that "Heaven Knows What" is phony, and certainly promoting a fake backstory that includes its actress, I am not speaking from inexperience.

Nevertheless, you should go on praising the film because it is clearly your idea of truth in storytelling. But I just want you to know, you are being hoodwinked or naive.

That is all. Love your podcasts. Anne remains Anne. Thank God!

It appears at this sentence where I used the word, S h – t that I was censored.

is undoubtedly a good con artist, but she knows only how to pretend about being or portraying a junkie.

which I doubt Arielle Holmes is,

Much of the movie was obsessed with histrionics and bombast, which I can tell you honestly is not how this world works. People injecting almost always want peace and quiet, not an scenario that includes waling, arguing, fisticuffs and screaming. The high is gone in that environment.

In fact E.C. your enthusiasm had me believing that I would actually be seeing a movie, honestly reflecting those within the drug dystopia. I was wrong. It is not your duty to know all the nuts and bolts of junkiedom, but let me assure you that this movie was achingly inaccurate on so many points that to list them would be, frankly, boring.

No it won’t. I’ll try simple sentences:

Great choices all all around. Except for one movie that I think/know is naively lauded. I received an pre-release screener of "Heaven Knows What", and was delighted because the praise about it was so ebullient.

Oh it seems to be working again. Perhaps I can finish my thought:

I have not finished a sentence, but it seems I have been censored? New normal I guess.
