The first teaser for Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG”—Big Friendly Giant—conjures up the slightly twisted fairy-tale wonder of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book, adapted here by “E.T.” screenwriter Melissa Mathison. “Never get out of bed,” our tiny heroine warns, before doing just that. “Never go to the window. Never look behind the curtain.”
The film stars newcomer Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, an orphan who befriends the BFG (this morning’s double Screen Actors Guild nominee Mark Rylance), ostracized by his fellow giants for declining to eat little boys and girls. The cast also features Rebecca Hall, Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, and Penelope Wilton.
“The BFG,” from Walt Disney Pictures, arrives in theaters next summer.
