Blumhouse Productions has found its new project in the documentary “Alive and Kicking,” an insider’s view of modern swing dance from director Susan Glatzer. The film follows a group of people who are inspired by dancing to mix up their own lives. The powerhouse production company, founded by Jason Blum, will produce and co-finance the documentary, as well as work with Glatzer to find distribution.

Blumhouse is known for specializing in low-budget horror, helming popular hits like “The Purge” and “Paranormal Activity.” However, in the past couple years the company has been working hard to branch out, finding both great success in the Oscar-winning “Whiplash” and a box office disaster with the failed “Jem and the Holograms” feature adaptation. With this latest production deal, the company is keeping its toes in the non-fiction world after producing “How to Dance in Ohio” and HBO’s acclaimed “The Jinx.”

Glatze, meanwhile, is taking to the director’s chair after years of working as a film executive at major studios and independent film companies. She’s held positions at Paramount Pictures and October Films and has been involved with projects such as “Breaking the Waves” and “Secrets & Lies.”

The deal was first reported by Variety.
