Ahead of the full nominations announcement this Friday, BAFTA has released the shortlisted nominees for the highly coveted Rising Star Award. The past winners in this category have all gone on to achieve global success, including James McAvoy, Kristen Stewart, Tom Hardy and Will Poulter. Last year, Jack O’Connell took home the award for his trifecta of performances in “Unbroken,” “71” and “Starred Up.”

Competing for the Rising Star Award this year will be Best Actress Oscar frontrunner Brie Larson (“Room”) and John Boyega, the “Attack the Block” actor who has finally gotten his international breakthrough performance as Finn in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Sundance darling Bel Powley (“The Diary of a Teenage Girl”) has also been shortlisted; she previously won the Best Actress at the Gotham Awards.

Rounding out the nominees are Taron Egerton, whose profile as skyrocketed following the success of “Kingsman: The Secret Service” almost a year ago, and Dakota Johnson, who was the only part of “Fifty Shades of Grey” that critics and fans agreed deserved serious praise.

The full list of BAFTA nominations will be announced on Friday. The ceremony will take place February 8.

I though Sam Taylor-Johnson’s direction and the cinematography deserved some praise too for 50 Shades. It was by no means a great film (source material and screenplay both lacking), but it looked good, STJ made some nice choices and Johnson did well with a rather Bella Swan-esque role. Maybe she’ll go on to become an award-winning actress like Kristen Stewart.
