Summer might seem an odd time to release a tale of rebellion during the Civil War — frankly, it seems like something more geared to the awards season — but perhaps “Free State Of Jones” will be a welcome break from the onslaught of big-budget blockbusters. And as one of our 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2016, it’s definitely one we’re keeping an eye an on.
Directed by Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games,” “Pleasantville“) and starring Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell, and Brendan Gleeson, the films tells the true story of farmer Newt Knight who rises up against the Confederacy.
“It’s a story about America and its relation with the individual and freedom,” McConaughey told EW. “The period of Reconstruction following the Civil War is still under construction today. Why we were divided by race instead of being united by class didn’t make sense to Newt Knight back then, and it wouldn’t make sense to him today.”
“Free State Of Jones” opens on May 13th. Check out the first poster below.
