Borderline Films has become one of the most dependable Sundance mainstays over the past several years, racking up awards left and right for hits such as “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and current Oscar dark horse “James White.” Dealing in subversive psychological drama, the Borderline team will be back in Park City once again this year as the executive producers of “The Eyes of My Mother,” which will have its world premiere in the NEXT section.

The feature film debut of Nicolas Pesce, the movie is a black-and-white genre piece about the dark obsessions of a lonely young woman, Francisca. The official synopsis reads: “Francisca has been unfazed by death from an early age—her mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, imbued her with a thorough understanding of the human anatomy. When tragedy shatters her family’s idyllic life in the countryside, her deep trauma gradually awakens some unique curiosities.”

Borderline won the NEXT section last year with “James White,” and with an intriguing premise and the promise of bold black-and-white cinematography, “The Eyes of My Mother” could very well follow in its footsteps. Below, Indiewire presents a first look photo from the Sundance premiere, which was also included on our list of 9 Hidden Gems from the 2016 Sundance Lineup. The image pretty much guarantees a feature full of uneasy beauty.
