J.J. Abrams & Colin Trevorrow Talk Rey, John Boyega Says 'Star Wars: Episode VIII' Is "Much Darker"

As “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” hurtles towards the $2-billion-worldwide mark, attention is turning toward the future. “Rogue One: A Story Wars Story,” which opens later this year, will soon wrap filming while later this month, production will begin on Rian Johnson‘s “Star Wars: Episode VIII.” And there are two central questions facing the story: What’s next for Luke Skywalker and Rey? Of course, none of the people involved are going to spoil anything, but J.J. Abrams and Colin Trevorrow (director of ‘Episode IX’) did tease about what’s coming.

“I know quite a bit [about Rey’s parentage],” Abrams said at the Television Critics Association’s press tour (via EW). “Obviously it’s not for me to talk about in this moment because this is Rian’s story to continue now. The last thing I’m going to do is reveal something that he would be upset about. I want to make sure that Rian gets the courtesy that he showed me.”

Meanwhile, Trevorrow was equally cagey when asked about the theories floating around connecting Luke and Rey. “We’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying,” he told ET. “Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of ‘The Force Awakens,’ but in the entire galaxy. She deserves it. We’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we’re just telling you what happened.”

Whatever is coming for Rey and Luke, according to Finn aka John Boyega, it sounds like there is a tough journey ahead. “…we just starting work on ‘Star Wars VIII,’ the next film, so I’m back to keeping secrets again,” he told Vogue. “It’s great. Much darker, but we’re very excited.”
