After earning international acclaim for his 2013 romance film “The Lunchbox,” filmmaker Ritesh Batra is getting a lot more serious for his adaptation of Julian Barnes’ best-selling novel “The Sense of an Ending,” which won the 2011 Man Booker Prize. The film was adapted by playwright Nick Payne and stars current Best Actress Oscar contender Charlotte Rampling opposite Jim Broadbent, Harriet Walter,, Emily Mortimer and Michelle Dockery.

The movie follows Tony Webster (Broadbent), who lives a reclusive and quiet life until hidden secrets from his past force him to look back at his flawed younger self, the truth about his first love (Rampling) and how long-forgotten decisions can have devastating consequences. The plot recalls some elements of Rampling’s “45 Years,” though we’ll have to wait and see just how closely Batra’s second feature ends up being to the star’s acclaimed drama.

There is no current release date for “The Sense of an Ending,” though CBS Films will be handling U.S. distribution.
