Whether sex talk makes you happy or uncomfortable, filmmaker Nicholas Tana is bringing a whole lot of it to his new documentary “Sticky: A (Self) Love Story,” which wipes clean generations of misconceptions and general social embarrassments regarding masturbation. The film covers topics from multiple perspectives, grabbing interviews with several political activists, porn stars, sexologists, priests and rabbis to uncover the history of masturbation in the public eye. Subjects include Larry Flynt, the founder of Hustler, porn star Nina Hartley and comedian Jeanne Garofalo.
“Making this movie was a real challenge; it took nearly a decade… It’s a touchy subject that affects us all, especially with technology blurring the lines between what is sex and what is masturbation,” Tana told Indiewire in an official statement. “As a filmmaker, I feel as if most documentaries these days repeat the same theme or subject matter. This is not another documentary on climate change, but it is a subject that touches us all.”
