One of the more peculiar titles at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in "Southside With You," Richard Tanne’s directorial debut that imagines just how exactly Barack and Michele Obama’s first date might have gone down. With the Presidential couple entering their final year in office, the intimate romance couldn’t be coming at a more relevant time, and Tanne has taken a page from Richard Linklater’s playbook in reducing his story to a walk-and-talk one-day structure.
Tika Sumpter co-developed the film and stars as Michelle, while Parker Sawyers, best known for small roles in "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," plays Barack.
"I tried to stay away about anything from their lives that took place after the summer of 1989," Tanne told Yahoo! Movies. "I was only ever looking to tell the story of the first date. And I think that, in order to just capture that moment in time, it was important to take into account everything in their lives only up until that point. Because to consider the events that came after would almost be somehow winking or nodding at w!hat was to come. And I just wanted to make this about that one moment in time."
