As our culture steadily progresses in becoming a more sexually-accepting society, one documentary dares to have the courage to take on one of the last remaining taboos: Good-ole’ masturbation.

“Sticky: A (Self) Love Story,” directed by Nicholas Tana, wishes to wipe clean the generations of misconceptions (hairy palms, blindness, etc.) and the general social embarrassment regarding the subject, instead revealing the act to be mankind’s greatest dirty little secret.

The film covers topics from multiple prospectives, grabbing interviews with several political activists, porn stars, sexologists, priests and rabbis. Subjects include Larry Flynt, the founder of Hustler, and comedian Jeanne Garofalo.

Describing his work, Tana notes, “Making this movie was a real challenge; it took nearly a decade… It’s a touchy subject that affects us all, especially with technology blurring the lines between what is sex and what is masturbation. As a filmmaker, I feel as if most documentaries these days repeat the same theme or subject matter. This is not another documentary on climate change, but it is a subject that touches us all.”

“Sticky: A (Self) Love Story” will be released through Vision Films on February 1. Check out the exclusive trailer above and a new poster below.

The history of taboo would make a fascinating subject for a dozen feature-length documentaries, let alone one. I find it applaudable that Tana has elected to tackle one not of the distant or even recent past, but of the present: public discussion of this private act often is regarded like talking about nose picking. Given the social consequences in human interaction and procreation for such sexual naïveté, it’s a good thing that Nick made a film about something patently not immoral or harmful, but which still has a tinge of being something shameful or immature to discuss outside of deflecting comedic contexts.

Awesome! I hope it’s on Showtime!

I’d clap for this documentary but my hands are busy!

How can you love others without loving yourself? We filters all sensations and feeling through our own egos and feelings, whether we care to admit it or not.

Mark Sawyer

Masturbation is a sin. Sex is for procreation. Unless you think about Jesus when you do it.

Tina Johnson

If a man can’t it it done, I’ll do it myself. Ain’t nothing wrong with that!
