2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

READ MORE: Indiewire Awards Season Spotlight

After an incredible streak that brought it 7 trophies in this category, Pixar has been shut out two years running. If there’s one thing we were always certain about, it’s that “Inside Out” would change that this year. While Duke Johnson and Charlie Kaufman’s “Anomalisa” is a masterpiece, it seems like nothing will be able to stop the sheer brilliance and inventive originality of “Inside Out.”

Below is Anne Thompson’s take on how things might shake down in the race for best animated feature. Check out Thompson on Hollywood’s Oscar predictions pages for more awards season analysis. Click here for more category breakdowns on Indiewire.

“Anomalisa”
“Boy and the World”
“Inside Out”

CHARLEY TOMPKINS

SHAUN THE SHEEP IS DEFINEITLY THE WINNWR

PAUL RICHARDS

When i watched Shaun The sheep with my daughter, I was impresed of The great animation of The movie.

STEVEN THOMPSON

Shaun The sheep is The greatest movie of 2015.Shaun The sheep defeated inside out,big hero 6,hotel transylvania 2,and anomalisa.

PHILLIP

SHAUN THE SHEEP WILL BE THE WINNER, BECAUSE IT HAS A GREAT ANIMATION AND A GOOD STORY, ALSO SHAUN THE SHEEP HAS 99% IN ROTTEN TOMATOES.
OTHER 2015 MOVIES:
INSIDE OUT 91%
HOME 73%
BIG HERO 6 85%
THE GOOD DINOSAUR 78%
STAR WARS 7:THE FORCE AWAKENS 95%
SO SHAUN THE SHEEP HAS A LOT OF OPPORTUNITY TO WIN.SHAUN,BITZER, AND THE FARMER ARE SO LUCKY.

ALFREDO FIGUEROA

Should win: Shaun The Sheep

JUAN RAMÓN

Shaun The Sheep is totally The winner, Because The Movie got 99% in Rotten Tomatoes, and it has a good story.

Lory

Not only should "Inside Out" be crowned the winner, if Academy voters were smart it would also win the regular Best Picture award as well.

Anany

Should win: Inside Out. Shoulda been here: Minions.

Tomáš Zelenka

They view this catogory as "for kids" so even if they would think Anomalisa is better, they would still vote for Inside Out.

Evan

One would consider "Anomalisa" to be a potential spoiler, but there’s really no potential spoiler here because "Inside Out" was declared by most people (myself included) as the best animated movie of 2015. So Best Animated Feature will probably be the biggest lock of the night.

Tale

Inside Out was great and deserving but will likely get it because ‘hur dur! It’s Pixar! We don’t know this foreign stuff’ says the academy voters.

NUX

My Final Prediction for BEST ANIMATED FILM: In Alphabetical Order: 1.ANOMALISA, 2.THE BOY AND THE WORLD, 3.INSIDE OUT, 4.SHAUN THE SHEPP, 5.WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE. And the BEST ANIMATED FILM goes to INSIDE OUT!!!!!

nari

if anomalisa looses we riot

NUX

MY Final Prediction:
Sure win: INSIDE OUT. Sure nominees: 1.ANOMALISA, 2.SHAUN THE SHEEP. Contenders for the 4th and 5th spots: 1.THE BOY AND THE WORLD(A dark horse that can beat Inside out if it will be nominated.), 2.WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE(Could it be like Spirited Away? or Could be like From Up on Poppy Hill?) 3.THE GOOD DINOSAUR (Beautiful Animation but the story is predictable.) 4.THE PEANUTS MOVIE (Is it great? or only young viewers enjoyed the movie?) 5.HOME (Some critics don’t like the film, but most of the audience like it) 6.THE REGULAR SHOW MOVIE (Because sometimes there’s a film ïn the nominees list that you can say "What? Really?"

Paulette

Inside Out is the most obvious choice to wind this. The good dinasour was good, but not great, and the same can be said for this new take on "The Little Prince" Ghibli’s "When Marnie was There" is a beautiful film both aesthetically and story wise, but with how commercial this awards are, it seems unlikely that it will win.

NUX

The Good Dinosaur has a great animation but the Story was Predictable. I think it will be like in the case of RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and MONSTERS UNIVERSITY where they have great animations but they don’t get nominated. INSIDE OUT will win this year. Followed by ANOMALISA and THE BOY AND THE WORLD. If THE LITTLE PRINCE was eligible for OSCARS 2016, maybe It can beat Inside Out. But It’s only eligble for OSCARS 2017. Inside Out is very lucky.

Evan

I have not seen "When Marnie Was There," but out of the two movies that are being considered a contender for a nomination, that should be the one to get nominated. "The Good Dinosaur" doesn’t deserve to be nominated. Besides, either way, it doesn’t stand a chance at winning. "Inside Out" will win for sure and "Anomalisa" will be the runner-up!

John

Anomalisa all the way. It looks too real to even be considered animated. Plus the story is as human as any animation film will ever gonna get.

NUX

INSIDE OUT will win,
Anomalisa will be Runner Up and
The Boy and The World will be the Dark Horse.
3 It will be nice to see different types of animations if this 3 will get nominated.
and a surprise nominees from HOME.

Evan

I mean it could be a "threat." Hate typing on my iPhone sometimes. Lol

Evan

I thought "Anomalisa" was incredible. But I have to agree that "Inside Out" was definitely better. That being said, there’s no way "Anomalisa" will beat "Inside Out" for the category. It could be a treat, but I don’t see it happening.

Riley

I will rephrase on Anomalisa being a nice film. I really really enjoyed it and it’s terrific, I just enjoyed inside out more.

Riley

I saw Anomalisa and after all the buzz I was let down a little bit. It’s a nice film but I think if it beats Inside Out (which it might the way precursors are going) this award will be given to the wrong film

Christian

The Good Dinosaur was a bag of poo

Tomáš Zelenka

If is the nominating process the same as last year (based on average rating by people who has seen it) then Good Dinosaur is probably not going to get nominated and well received pictures like Boy and the World have a good chance of getting nominated.

Evan

@Danny As terrific as "Anomalisa" was, "Inside Out" was one of the greatest animation achievements I’ve ever seen. So I believe it’ll win Best Animated Film and get nominated for Best Picture.

Josh Relyea

Boy and the World is at #12?! Best animated film of the year hands down!

Danny

Inside Out is certainly very good, but you can’t compare anything to Kaufman’s Anomalisa, which in my opinion should be nominated for best picture as well.

Ralph

we can replace good dinosaur to the little prince

NUX

Top Contender:
INSIDE OUT versus ANOMALISA.
Other Contender:
THE GOOD DINOSAUR versus SHAUN THE SHEEP
THE PEANUTS MOVIE versus HOME
Dark Horse: THE BOY AND THE WORLD.

Claire

Would be a shame if When Marnie Was There didn’t get nominated. Honestly, I would throw that one in and take The Good Dinosaur out, but Disney unfortunately owns this, but do they still own Studio Ghibli?

Chris Kostaras

I already don’t take the academy awards seriously, but if Inside Out wins over Anomalisa, I’m gonna scream.

Evan

"The Good Dinosaur’s" chances of getting nominated may be hurt now.

Sebastian

The Shaun the Sheep Movie was really amazing, and so was Inside Out. Not sure if Good Dinosaur will make the cut, especially if the Academy decide to nominate less than 5 films for this category like in the past.

Ralph

Anomalisa is freaking awesome, It can astound everyone if it’d defeat two great pixars

Evan

So far, "The Good Dinosaur" has been getting not bad, but meh reviews.

Abhijeet

Why are you people so inconsiderate of the Japanese animated movies? I’ve given ‘When Marnie Was There’ a watch, and it’s a magnificent spectacle! Do behold the magic that Studio Ghibli has bestowed on its audience in the past three decades.

Evan

"Inside Out" is still my favorite animated movie of the year just so you all know!

Evan

I just saw "The Peanuts Movie" and absolutely LOVED it. If it doesn’t get nominated, it’ll be a flat-out crime. I still like "Inside Out" and still think it’s going to win, but "Peanuts" should at least get a nomination in the category.

Stacy

Bad choices! See the IMDB:

Inside Out: 8.4
Boy and the World: 8.1
Anomalisa 8.0
Peanuts 7.8
When Marnie was There 7.8
Shaun the sheep movie 7.4
Giovanni’s Island 7.4
Hotel Transilvania II 7.0
Khaliu Gibrans the prophet 6.8
Home 6.7
Minions 6.5
Sponge Bob 6.1
Strange Magic 5.7

The good dinosaur- not released

Aaron

While I doubt it will be even mentioned in the race, I thought ‘Adama’ was beautiful.

jennifer

dreamworks needs to win an oscar. it’s been 10 years since they won. Home is the best animated film i’ve seen, i can’t stop thinking about it. pixar is an oscar hog, not letting anyone else get a chance. PLEASE DREAMWORKS NEEDS THIS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sean Courtney

Amonalisa looks absolutely incredible and inspiring. Every critical review has said that it is life changing. I hope it gets a node for best animation, screenplay, and best picture

Anonymous

"The Good Dinosaur" doesn’t even look all that special.

S

I don’t think Zarafa is eligible. It was included in the Academy’s list of 21 animated films in the running back in 2012. I guess it had a qualifying run back then.

Willian, godot

Boy and the World is simply the best. Have you seen this movie? It’s revolution in animation. Pixar is almost Disney: Always the same.

Matt Richardson

Inside Out has everything the critics like, a thoughtful plot, a creative concept and a witty way of presenting it all. I know there are two Pixar movies and people are worried about a split in the vote, but when the other movie is rather simple in nature and has literally no dialogue, Id say the voters will likely rally around Inside Out. Other nominees will be Shaun the Sheep, Peanuts, Good Dinosaur, and Little Prince

Ali Marashian

Inside Out, Anomalisa, Shaun the sheep movie, When Marnie was there. These will difinitely be nominated. But I think Inside Out will win.

MH

It would be such an embarassment if Minions got nominated

sam

Minions will not get nominated, same with sponge bob it’s good silly fun but there stories are nothing special and the animation is really nothing to brag about, neither tend to dig in to any massive emotion either

Evan

Even if "Anomalisa’s" great, it still doesn’t stand a chance against "Inside Out" for the Oscar. "The Good Dinosaur" doesn’t even stand a chance against it. Although that movie is not out yet, I got a feeling it will be good, but nothing special. So I still think it’ll end up being "Inside Out" vs. "The Peanuts Movie" for Best Animated Feature.

JackCox

Anomalisa will absolutely be a lock if it gets released this year.

Jonatan Blomberg

What about Anomalisa?

Paul

Shaun the Sheep DESERVES a nom. It is freaking hysterical, smart, witty, touching…. If you haven’t seen it, DO!!!

nowhereman136

Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, The Little Prince, The Prophet, and When Marnie was There are all my picks.

I havent heard much about The Boy and the World but i wanna check it out now. Shaun the Sheep was very good, but it’s too cutesy for the Academy, there is no emotional depth to that movie. Any other mainstream american animation like Home, Minions, and Hotel Trans are too low brow for the Academy. The Peanuts movie could squeak in taking one of the foreign films spots if it’s good enough

GERMAN

I’d say Shaun The Sheep has potential to win, if it weren’t for, you know, Disney’s evil plan to take over the world. Just kidding.

Jonah

How about Charlie Kaufman’s "Anomalisa"?

Evan

We all know "Inside Out" will win. I don’t look for it to be Pixar vs. Pixar in the category. My prediction is it will be "Inside Out" vs. "The Peanuts Movie."

TheSimpson

Inside Out is going to win, there is no competition, at all! The rest of the nominees, i think you should include Shaun The Sheep, it’s getting really nice reviews and truly deserved…

ZJ

Normally I would say "Inside Out" has it wrapped up due to good reviews and the Pixar brandname (which, let’s face it, even if Inside Out was mediocre it’d still have the advantage for those many voters who blindly cast their ballot for any nominated Pixar film), but the fact that "The Good Dinosaur" is coming out as well could be more of a hinderance than a benefit. I could very well see a potential vote-split among those Pixar voters, especially since Good Dinosaur comes out closer to awards season.

If this does happen, I can see "The Peanuts Movie" (so long as it’s well received) winning the Oscar. After all, most voters tend to be apathetic towards this category and vote for whatever their kid liked/what company made it, but some of those same voters may feel different with ‘Peanuts’ because they grew up with it. Just my two cents. So I’ll go against the grain with my early predictions:
1.)The Peanuts Movie
2.) Inside Out
3.) Good Dinosaur
4.) When Marnie was There
5.) Either Minions (because of $$$ and kids love that stuff) or The Little Prince

misha0-1

2016 OSCAR PREDICTIONS BEST ANIMATED FEATURE:
1.The Little Prince
2.Inside Out
3.The Peanuts Movie
4.Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet
5.The Good Dinosaur

BlueFox94

If Minions gets nominated, I’ll be upset. It’s my least favorite film of 2015 so far.

MY NOMINEES:
The Good Dinosaur
Inside Out
The Peanuts Movie
Shaun The Sheep Movie
When Marnie Was There (since The Little Prince’s American NY or LA theatrical release date has yet to be confirmed)

B

I think dragonball z resurrection f should get nominated for a change instead computer animated film.

Dave

I reckon The Secret Princess might get a surprise nomination for the story.

Riley

I didn’t like it at all, but surprised to not see Minions. Seems like they would nominate it.

lautaro fuentes

1.Inside Out
2.The Good Dinosaur
3.The Little Prince
4.Minions
5.When Marnie Was There
————————–
Could be too:
.Home
.Storks
.The Spongebob Movie

Evan

The year 2015 may not be over yet and Pixar still has "The Good Dinosaur" coming out in November, but I don’t think even that will top "Inside Out" for the best animated movie of the year. Most of all, no other animated movie coming out this year will top it. However, if there is any animated film coming soon that could be a threat to it, it’s "The Peanuts Movie." But we shall see!

Fer

I think my nominees for best animeted film are:
– Shaun The Sheep The Movie
-Inside Out
-Minions
-The Good Dinosur
-The Little Prince

Hall

Inside out will win. Already has a 100% on rotten tomatoes with 24 votes and SUPER creative. And everyone likes pixar

Stephanie

Pretty good selection, but is Robodog even going to be released?

A.B.

Is Bill Plympton’s "Cheatin’" eligible? Because, if it is, it deserves proper consideration.

simon

My predictions (In order of priority)

Inside out
The Peanuts movie
Minions
Shaun the Sheep
either The little Prince of When marnie was there

Unfortunate

Inside Out is winning this year. I mean, why would they deviate from the trend of automatically giving it to Disney and Pixar over better films?

Matt

I’m thinking Inside Out is a given to get in due to the Pixar factor. Although, even though it isn’t Pixar, we all thought the Lego Movie was a given and look what happened.

Lucca

The Boy and the World/ Inside Out/ Minions/ The Good Dinosaur/ Peanuts

Lucas

The Boy and the World and Inside Out!

Mr.f

Zarafa already had its Oscar qualifying run back in 2012 or 2013 so it’s not eligible this year. Underdogs doesn’t qualify either since it came out in Argentina over 2 years ago

kevi

Hint: Keep GKIDS allotted 1-2 slots. I would guess Inside Out/The Prophet/Shaun the Sheep/When Marnie Was There/Zarafa

Alexandria

The Little Prince because of it’s stop-motion animation! But story will liekly make it a flop! I haven’t seen any of these. When Marnie was There looks like a pretty good movie.

Tombeet

My guess would be:
– inside out
– the Good Dinosaur
-Shaun the Sheep the Movie (very well received in the UK, and the Academy really loves Aardman)
-The Boy and the World (winner of Annecy last year, and it got quite a strong following too)
-The prophet: ambitious and passionate.
Also in the running are The Little Prince and While Marnie were There

burkiss

As SHAUN THE SHEEP is currently rocking an incredible 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from 34 reviews, I’d expect it to make the cut.
