The Australian filmmaker’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” began its journey to ten Oscar nominations, including Best Director, at last year’s Cannes, where it debuted out of competition. Now, George Miller will preside over the jury for the festival’s 69th edition, May 11-21.
This is the fifth consecutive year the festival has selected a director to head the jury, which hands out the Palme d’Or: since Robert De Niro presided in 2011, Nanni Morretti, Steven Spielberg, Jane Campion, and Joel and Ethan Coen have all taken the reins. The honor caps a year in which, after a storied (and immensely varied) career, Miller has finally received his due.
“What an unmitigated delight!” he said in a statement. “I’ll be there with bells on!”
