“‘Midnight Special’ actually emerges most resonantly as a mournful homage, or maybe a psalm, to the primal instincts of fatherhood,” our review from the Berlin International Film Festival wrote earlier this month. Directed by Jeff Nichols (“Take Shelter,” “Mud”), “Midnight Special” has been gestating for well over a year now and is one of 2016’s most anticipated films.
Starring Michael Shannon and Jaeden Lieberher (the talented young actor from “St. Vincent” with Bill Murray), “Midnight Special” is a John Carpenter-ish sci-fi thriller about a father and son who go on the run from the authorities, the FBI, and religious extremists after the dad learns his child possesses special powers.
Here’s the film’s synopsis:
In the sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy’s special powers. What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
“Midnight Special” co-stars Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Bill Camp, Scott Haze, Paul Sparks, Sam Shepard, and makes its North American premiere at SXSW next month before opening in theaters on March 18th. Check out a bunch of new photos below.
