Essence Atkins Books Female Lead in NBC's Marlon Wayans Comedy Pilot

Essence Atkins has booked the female lead role in NBC’s new comedy pilot from Marlon Wayans, titled “Marlon,” which is inspired by the actor/comedian’s life.

Wayans will star in (and produce) the series that will follow the escapades of an unfitting but loving father who is committed to successful co-parenting with his polar opposite ex-wife. Atkins will play his ex-wife.

The comedy series will be produced by Universal Television, 3 Arts and Wayans Brothers Entertainment.

Chris Moynihan will pen the script and executive produce alongside Rick Alvarez and Michael Rotenberg.

Wayans and Atkins previously worked together in the first “Haunted House” horror comedy a couple of years ago, which was a sleeper hit and spawned a sequel that was released last year.

Deadline was first to report the news of Atkins’ casting.

They got good comic chemistry. ‘Shades of Black’ did decent enough business for the fans to show up. Sidebar…On an episode of ‘Half & Half’ Atkins’s character was attempting to seduce her engaged ex-boyfriend by wearing these short-shorts and bends over in front of him. I’m still amazed that got past the censors. End Sidebar.

She is so likeable. I hope this goes well for her.

Glad to hear it. Loved her in Are We There Yet?
