MGM Preps ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ Remake with Michael B. Jordan Starring

MGM Preps 'The Thomas Crown Affair' Remake with Michael B. Jordan Starring

“The Thomas Crown Affair” is getting yet another remake, as MGM continues to dig through its library archives for projects to redo. This time, in an unexpected though welcomed move, Michael B. Jordan has been cast in the lead role in the film.

Previously, in 1999, John McTiernan directed a new installment of the heist/romance film, starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, which itself was a remake of the 1968 film of the same name, directed and produced by Norman Jewison, starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, winning Best Original Song for Michel Legrand’s “Windmills of Your Mind.”

In short, the story goes… a debonair, adventuresome bank executive believes he has pulled off the perfect multi-million dollar heist, only to match wits with a sexy insurance investigator who will do anything to get her man.

The Michael B. Jordan remake set up at MGM doesn’t have a director or writer attached yet, nor has the female lead been cast.

Jordan previously worked with MGM on last year’s hit “Creed,” the sequel to the Rocky franchise with Sylvester Stallone, so the studio is looking to extend its relationship with the actor.

This could be interesting… I’m not exactly a fan of remakes/redos/reimaginings/etc, but I’m most certainly curious to see where this one goes in terms of who will be hired to write and direct, as well as what the cast will look like. If this remake can capture the ambiance of the original Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway film, it should win.

Kudos to Michael B. Jordan. I wondered what all the attention he received from “Creed” would eventually lead to. This is the first announced project he’s been attached to since “Creed.”

The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.

Here’s a clip of one of the more memorable scenes from the original 1968 film:

Jennifer Lopez was amazing in Out of Sight. She’s unwatchable in everything else she’s been in.

I love this film and am excited for this interesting direction. What I really want to see is an older woman/younger man situation. Who should be cast as the detective? Angela Bassett, Sofia Vergara, Thandie Newton, Jennifer Lopez (she was an amazing detective in Out of Sight).

I am a big fan of the original film with Steve McQueen. I don’t think Jordan is mature enough for this role. Both versions feature men who look to be in their forties. I was also under the impression that his next role was in a movie about the Atlanta school cheating scandal with Ryan Coogler directing.

MGM made this movie twice, originality is dead in Hollywoood. Idris Elba wasn’t pick, GOOD.

It seems like they are going for a younger "Thomas Crown Affair." I will have to wait till key positions are filled for a direction of this film.

If the treatment is similar to "Now You See Me", then I can picture this working.

Excited by the possibilities of reconfiguring this story with younger actors of color. I wish Ryan Coogler could be at the helm but he’s busy making Black Panther. Getting the right filmmaker is as crucial as the right female lead.

This role seems a bit mature for Jordan. I could have imagined Idris Elba in this. S&A had an article earlier on if Elba can still be a leading man. It looks like Hollywood made their decision on bypassing him for other Black actors. Interesting…

Now, if they will just cast Gabourey Sidibe as the female lead…this could be interesting…if not original.
