PODCAST: Is ‘Room’ a Secret Frontrunner for Best Picture?

PODCAST: Is 'Room' a Secret Frontrunner for Best Picture?

This week’s episode is brought to you by “Cartel Land,” from A&E Indie Films and The Orchard.

This past week has been a busy one for Oscar nominees. A jubilant luncheon brought some 150 nominees together for a group photo. The DGA awards happened. The WGA awards were anticipated. Ditto the BAFTAs. Oh, and today? Oscar ballots have landed.

Needless to say, it’s a hectic time, which doesn’t make this year’s winners any easier to predict. With "The Revenant," "The Big Short" and "Spotlight" all in contention for a number of big prizes, prognosticators don’t know quite where to turn. That’s the focus of this week’s episode of Screen Talk, in which Anne Thompson tells Eric Kohn about her experiences at the luncheon and ponders some of the more confusing categories, including best picture. Could "Room" wind up with enough second place votes to quietly make its way to frontrunner status? Stranger things have happened.

sorry, room was a mediocre movie on all fronts. and the soundtrack was tone-deaf from beginning to end.

Wow, some critics actually are given a platform to spew this kind of nonsense. Revenant swept the BAFTAS today, making it the runaway Oscar train. Even with the second vote theory, how many people are going to get behind Room instead of Spotlight or Big Short? Room will get the well-deserved Best Actress, but keep your eye on Leo and company.
