Trailer Watch: A Teacher Works with MI6 in Susanna White's Spy Thriller 'Our Kind of Traitor'

A trailer has arrived for British helmer Susanna White’s upcoming “Our Kind of Traitor.” The spot for the spy thriller comes hot off the news that Jessica Chastain will star in White’s next feature, “Woman Walks Ahead.”

We’re introduced to Perry (Ewan McGregor) and Gail (Naomie Harris, “Spectre”), a couple who have their dinner interrupted by a fellow restaurant patron (Stellan Skarsgard). He insists that the pair join him for a drink. Later he invites them to a “small party” that turns out to be an extraordinarily lavish soirée — the kind you’d expect Gatsby to host.

Then things get even weirder.

“I need your help,” the mysterious stranger tells an incredulous Perry. Perry insists that he is merely a teacher — someone who couldn’t possibly be of much help to a person so rich and powerful. “Give this to your MI6. Tell them you have a gift from the number one money launderer from the Russian mafia.”

Perry does as asked, but that’s just the beginning of his and Gail’s journey — not the end of it. The Average Joe ends up intimately connected to a high-stakes, mortally dangerous mission. And he doesn’t seem quite sure where his loyalties lie.

“I learned that anything is possible,” White told Women and Hollywood of her experience making “Our Kind of Traitor.” She explained, “We shot in five countries, ranging from snow in Finland to searing heat in Morocco, and filmed as we traveled: We managed to move ourselves and our belongings from London to Paris on the Eurostar at the same time as shooting a scene. Within 24 hours we had gone from a shooting a dawn scene on a mountaintop in the Alps to a tech recce in Marrakech — I’ll never forget seeing HMI lamps swinging from below a helicopter as they were airlifted off the mountain while we headed to Marseilles to take our flight.”

“Our Kind of Traitor” will hit theaters in the UK May 5 and the U.S. come early June.
