In film, like in any medium, it’s rare that some kind of development comes along that revolutionizes the way we make or watch something, and while it can’t yet be said if STX Entertainment’s new film, "Hardcore Henry," will change the industry, the absolutely bonkers trailer above proves that it’s going to make one hell of an effort trying. Told entirely from the point-of-view of its character, the action film, previously titled "Hardcore" when it premiered at TIFF last year, is the closest movies have ever gotten to simulating video games.

STX’s official synopsis for the film reads: "You remember nothing. Mainly
because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley
She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later,
you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should
probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila
Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries,
and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of
Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious
British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley.) He may be on your side,
but you aren’t sure. If you can survive the insanity,
and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the
truth behind your identity."

If the description above doesn’t instantly stand out to you as the longline for a video game, than the trailer above definitely will. The opening sequence of almost every major role-playing video game in the last decade begins the same way: Your about to have your head cut off on a chopping block ("Skyrim"), your crashing in an airplane ("Bioshock") and your getting shot in the head ("Fallout: New Vegas"), after which you somehow survive and embark on a blood and action-filled quest to seek vengeance on those that did this to you and to find out why and how you were saved.

Is it a video game or a movie? We can’t really tell, but we’re certainly intrigued. "Hardcore Henry" will stop by the SXSW Film Festival in March before opening nationwide on April 8. Watch the trailer above.
