In case you haven’t realized just yet that there is no line of demarcation between film and television, FX has released the first trailer for a new series starring Oscar nominee Tom Hardy — who could very well collect his trophy this Sunday — in the dark period thriller, “Taboo.”
Based on an original story by Tom Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy, the official synopsis reads as follows: “Set in 1814, ‘Taboo’ follows James Keziah Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and comes back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But his father’s legacy is a poisoned chalice, and with enemies lurking in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder, and betrayal, a dark family mystery unfolds in a combustible tale of love and treachery.”
The series is a joint production between FX and BBC One, with Ridley Scott attached as a producer and “Locke” director Steven Knight the official creator and showrunner. This marks Hardy and Knight’s third collaboration, after “Peaky Blinders” and “Locke.”
When Hardy recently spoke with Anne Thompson about the series — saying quickly upon the title’s first mention, “I’m really excited about it” — he discussed how the story he, his father and Knight set out to tell isn’t the one we’re going to see. “We have a story which we pitched them, and what we’re shooting […] is not quite what we pitched them. It’s taken on its own organic element, which is exciting.” He went on to talk about how he was “humbled” by the challenges of being a creative partner in addition to acting in the series, so make sure to watch the whole video interview at Thompson on Hollywood for more information on “Taboo.”
Production is still underway in London on the eight-part first season. “Taboo” isn’t expected to premiere until 2017.
