Joey Shanks has released another handy step-by-step guide on his YouTube channel, Shanks FX. This time, he shows you how to manipulate water.

Shanks explains that water illusions occur when you film fast movement with a capable camera. To the naked eye, water movement looks like a blur, but with a fast enough shutter speed, it is possible to capture the moment in time with a camera. This effect is known as Temporal Aliasing or the Wagon Wheel effect.

Here’s what you’ll need: a speaker, flexible hose, running water, a camera that can record at 24 seconds a second and a tone generator (available in app form). What to do from there? Watch the video above to see the illusion in action, courtesy of Shanks FX.
