After successfully acquiring Jeff Nichols’s highly anticipated follow-up to “Midnight Special” at the Berlin International Film Festival last month, Focus Features has announced a release date for “Loving,” scheduling the film for a timely November release date. The film will receive a limited release on November 4, and will expand a week later on the 11th.
The official synopsis for the film notes “Loving” as a tribute to "the real-life courage and commitment of Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and African-American woman who fell in love and were married in 1958. The state of Virginia, where they were making their home, sought to end their love story by first jailing and then banishing them. But together they took a civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, all the way to the Supreme Court, which reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their union became an inspiration to couples everywhere."
Written and directed by Nichols himself, the story is inspired by Nancy Buirski’s Emmy-winning documentary, “The Loving Story.” The film stars Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga and Michael Shannon. With Edgerton and Shannon also included in Nichols’s “Midnight Special,” and Negga as a regular in AMC’s upcoming series, “Preacher,” it seems like everybody involved will have quite the year to celebrate.
“Loving” will premiere on November 4 with a limited release, and will expand widely on November 11. "Midnight Special" opens in New York, Los Angeles and Austin this Friday, March 18.
