Jake Johnson has added another fresh jolt to his ever-expanding career by signing on to share the big screen with Tom Cruise for the remake of a reinvigorated fan favorite franchise, in the form of Universal’s rebooted "The Mummy." Variety reports that Johnson has come on board to play a member of the military in the new film, set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman.

This casting continues to solidify the notion that Johnson is more that just the dopey (but lovable) hipster Nick of "New Girl" fame. Johnson’s transition to working on big budget films has held steady over the years, as the actor has moved from turns in popular indie features like "Safety Not Guaranteed," "Digging For Fire" and "Drinking Buddies" to supporting roles in major blockbusters, like last summer’s "Jurassic World."

The film will also feature Annabelle Wallis and Sofia Boutella. Screenwriter Jon Spaihts is writing the script, which reportedly moves the story’s action to the present day.

"The Mummy" reboot is slated to hit theaters June 9, 2017.
