Matthew McConaughey's Civil War-Set 'Free State of Jones' Gets New Release Date

Deadline reports that Gary RossMatthew McConaughey-starring Civil War epic, “Free State of Jones,” is moving back a month on the release date calendar. Originally scheduled to open on May 13, the STX Entertainment feature will now open on June 24.

The film centers on McConaughey’s character, Newt Knight, “a defiant Southern farmer who bands together with local slaves and farmers to take on the Confederacy. Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, MS, to secede from the Confederacy and create a Free State of Jones.” The film also stars Keri Russell, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mahershala Ali.

Although this new date will move the film away from the sure-to-be-blockbuster “Captain America: Civil War,” which is opening on May 6, it will now face off with the “Independence Day” sequel, “Independence Day: Resurgence,” which is opening on the same day. STX may be hoping for a little counter-programming kick, especially as the month winds down and leads directly into, of all things, actual Independence Day.
