Mike Birbiglia and Ira Glass were still beaming on Monday when they hosted Indiewire’s SXSW Film Festival party in Austin. The previous night, Birbiglia premiered "Don’t Think Twice," his lively comedy-drama about an improv group in New York that faces questions about their future when one of them gets cast on a big sketch comedy show. The director’s follow-up to his indie sensation "Sleepwalk With Me" — which, like "Don’t Think Twice," was produced by Glass — the new movie received a wildly positive reaction at its premiere and strong reviews, which bodes well for its prospects in the coming months. (While a specific release date is yet to be determined, the pair hope to travel around with the movie as it opens in various cities, much as they did with "Sleepwalk With Me").
At Indiewire’s party, which took place at a house on the outskirts of downtown, Glass and Birbiglia milled about with numerous filmmakers, programmers and other members of the community. The crowd included SXSW Film Festival producer Janet Pierson, sales agent Steven Bee and several filmmakers with work screening in this year’s lineup. Local family-run taco restaurant Habanero catered the event. Addressing the crowd, Glass saluted Indiewire’s 20-year history, particularly as it relates to "a feeling of idealism and wanting to do something good…that’s what Indiewire’s trying to support and document." He concluded by offering a toast to "making stuff that’s decent."
