Move Over, Batman and Superman: PBS is Bringing Some Real-Life Heroes to the Small Screen

Despite our fascination and love for the escapist world of cinema, the most inspiring stories already come directly from our surroundings, from the world off the screen. Fortunately, the art of documentary filmmaking works to capture the stories from those very people who we may otherwise overlook, only for these films to help us remember that the real world can be even stranger than fiction. Featuring stories from real-life heroes and outcasts, POV’s latest season will present a vast range of highly important and thought-provoking documentaries, from the Oscar-nominated “The Look of Silence” to the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival selection, “The Return.”

As they celebrate their 29th season, POV’s latest run on PBS will present some of the most fascinating stories from people all over the world, from all walks of life. From war heroes, criminals returning to society on parole, to hospice patients and a group of Afghan girls, the series will explore a variety of stories from individuals whose reintegration to society is something like climbing a very steep mountain. As they go back home and try to live normal lives, they find themselves fighting against the odds as they face great struggles within themselves and with the environments surrounding them.

Of the new lineup, Executive Producer Chris White said, “These talented storytellers, masters of their craft, introduce us to ordinary people forced to navigate extraordinary circumstances. Whether confronting brutal repression, their own personal failings or grave illness, these individuals face their challenges squarely and allow us to witness how their lives are transformed in the process.”
