Written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, “Hands of Stone” seems to be one of the earliest Oscar contenders for The Weinstein Company this year. The biopic is Jakubowicz’s first English-language film, and stars Robert De Niro, Édgar Ramirez, Usher Raymond, Ana de Armas, Ellen Barkin and John Turturro.

Ramirez plays Roberto Duran, the Panamanian boxer who made his debut at 16-years-old in 1968, and did not retire until age 50 in 2002. Duran is perhaps most well-known for defeating Sugar Ray Leonard (Raymond), capturing the WBC welterweight title and ultimately returning to his corner during their November rematch. After this transpired, he famously said the words “no más.”

De Niro pulls a Sylvester Stallone in “Creed,” as he switches from playing a boxing champion in “Raging Bull” to the legendary boxing coach Ray Arcel. The movie reunites both Ramirez and De Niro from David O. Russell’s “Joy” from last year.

“Hands of Stone” will be released in theaters on August 26. View the poster below.
