Every year, the SXSW Film Festival celebrates its midpoint by doling out a series of juried awards for both its feature film and short film sections, along with special accolades for film design (from posters to titles) and a series of special awards that honor the unique history of the festival. It’s a hell of a way to commemorate the nine-day festival, and it’s also a great barometer of some major indie talents emerging on the scene. Proof positive: Last year’s big winner, Trey Edward Shults’ ambitious and bold "Krisha," is actually hitting theaters this week thanks to indie distributor A24. Now that’s an anniversary.
This year’s big winners included narrative feature "The Arbalest" and documentary feature "TOWER." Other awards were doled out to "Hunter Gatherer," "Miss Stevens" and "The Seer."
Tonight’s awards ceremony took place tonight at Austin, Texas’ own Paramount Theatre, hosted by fan favorite and "Don’t Think Twice" director Mike Birbiglia.
