"Game of Thrones" is nothing if not dark, and darkness reigns over the first trailer for Season 6. Starting on a melancholic note with characters like Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Cersei (Lena Headey) wandering and wondering through the open landscape of Westeros, the nearly two-minute preview abruptly changes tone in the second half, inviting in the excitement and anger fans have come to expect from the Emmy-winning hit.

The predominant song in the trailer is "Wicked Game" performed by James Vincent McMorrow, a fitting title and haunting ode to the spirit of the brutal series. The sparse notes offer a fitting contrast to the lyrics and images, all while setting an aptly serious tone for the events ahead.

"Game of Thrones" kicks off its 10-episode sixth season Sunday, April 24 at 9pm. Watch the trailer above.
