It’s been close to two years since the last release from LAIKA, the stop-motion animation studio that has so far delievered the goods with each effort, bringing us wonderful films like "Coraline," "Paranorman" and "The Boxtrolls." Needless to say, their next project has been highly anticipated, as each new peek into this year’s "Kubo and the Two Strings" continues to amaze us and increase the hype.
True to any LAIKA production, we embark on another adventure with a kid whose abilities are far more powerful than they can initially comprehend. In "Kubo and the Two Strings," we follow the eponymous hero as he tells fantastical stories to the people who live in his village located by the sea. However, his humble life suddenly explodes as he accidentally summons a spirit from his past, who comes crashing down with a vengeance, thus unleashing an age-old vendetta. With a little help from his friends, Kubo sets out on a quest that is nothing less than thrilling and magical as he tries to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai in the world. As he summons his courage, gathers help from his friends and magical shamisen, Kubo sets sail on an electrifying odyssey as he discovers his family’s past and fulfills his destiny as a hero.
The film includes Art Parkinson as Kubo, who you might be more familiar with as Rickon from "Game of Thrones." Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Ralph Fiennes and George Takei round out the rest of the fantastic voice cast.
We get giddy with excitement with each release from LAIKA, and we have a feeling you might be the same after seeing this new trailer for the studio’s latest feature. Check out the new trailer above. "Kubo and the Two Strings" will be available in theaters this summer on August 19.
