Exactly one month ago, anyone anticipating Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster” had a reason to panic after Alchemy sold the festival sensation to A24 and the film’s original March release date was wiped clean. Cinephiles have been waiting in the wings ever since to see when exactly A24 would open the film amidst their jam-packed 2016 roster, but it now looks like we won’t have to wait too much longer. In addition to releasing a delirious new trailer, A24 has announced “The Lobster” will open on May 13, meaning the indie summer movie season will be kicking off with one of the year’s very best.

“The Lobster” dazzled Cannes audiences last May and found a ton of success on the festival circuit throughout the fall. Mixing a unique deadpan atmosphere with sharp world-building, the satire stars a never-better Colin Farrell as an architect who checks into a hotel after his wife leaves him. The hotel is revealed to be a very dark and twisted romance service, where each guest has just 45 days to find a new partner or else they’ll be turned into an animal of their choosing. John C. Reilly, Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman and Lea Seydoux co-star.

In his A- review of the film, Indiewire’s Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn raved, “‘The Lobster’ brings Lanthimos’ distinct blend of morbid, deadpan humor and surrealism to a broader canvas without compromising his ability to deliver another thematically rich provocation.”

“The Lobster” opens May 13. Watch the new trailer above.
