Taryn Manning has won universal acclaim as Litchfield’s most devilish detainee in “Orange is the New Black,” but now she’s showing a more vulnerable side in the trailer for “A Light Beneath Their Feet.” Manning plays Gloria, a mother who is wrestling with the emotion of saying goodbye to college-bound daughter Beth (Madison Davenport), all while trying to manage her bipolar disorder. Meanwhile, Beth grapples between following her dreams and staying close by to care for her mother.
The trailer touches on many of the coming-of-age aspects of their journey, from sweeter domestic moments between the pair, to complications with Beth’s hunky love interest, Jeremy (Carter Mark Jenkins). But the filmmakers are hoping to touch a deeper nerve beyond entertainment.
“A Light Beneath Their Feet’ is one of those rare opportunities to work on a project that is both entertaining and has an important message,” said Emerging Pictures Exec VP Ryan Nadel.
The cast also includes Nora Dunn (“Entourage”), Kali Hawk (“Black Jesus”) and Maddie Hasson (“Twisted”), with Valerie Weiss (“Losing Control”) directing and a script from Moira McMahon (“Private Practice”). “Light” got some great early buzz by winning the audience award at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
Emerging Pictures will bring the film to theaters on May 6.
