A24 Goes International, 'Star Wars' Launches Charity Program and More — Indiewire's Tuesday Rundown

Mark Hamill and Kathleen Kennedy have announced a new “Star Wars: Force for Change” charitable campaign, an initiative that inspires people to make a positive impact on the world. Starting April 5, “Star Wars: Force for Change” will match the donations of “Star Wars” fans to four select charities up to $1,000,000. Find out more here

— Tribeca Film Institute today announced the 2016 grantees of the TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund, a partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which provides filmmakers with funding and professional guidance to support innovative and compelling films that offer a fresh take on science, mathematics, and technology. This year grantees include “The Burning Season,” directed by Claire McCarthy and written and produced by Jenny Halper, and “Human Terrain,” directed and produced by Parisa Barani and written by Jennifer Blackmer.

Starz has gotten in on the streaming business with today’s launch of a brand new streaming app that will allow its users to access most of the cable channel’s most popular programs. The service costs $8.99 a month, which is cheaper than both HBO and Showtime’s streaming apps. The new app will be available to both existing customers and new subscribers.
— The Montclair Film Festival has today announced its full lineup for its fifth annual festival. This year’s fest boasts over 150 films, special events, conversations, parties, and panels. Additionally, the festival will host over 100 filmmakers over the course of the ten-day event. This year’s lineup includes such exciting titles as “Always Shine,” “Chevalier,” “Under the Shadow,” “Kate Plays Christine,” “Tower,” “The Arabalest” and many more. — The Austin Film Festival & Screenwriters Conference has announced today its 2016 Extraordinary Contribution to Film and Distinguished Screenwriter award recipients. Paul Feig and Nancy Meyers, who will be honored at the Festival’s 23rd anniversary this October 13-20. AFF annually recognizes outstanding filmmakers and screenwriters for their accomplished bodies of work and contributions toward furthering the art and craft of storytelling. Last year’s honorees included Chris Cooper, Brian Helgeland, Norman Lear, and John Singleton.

— A24 will handle the worldwide release of the highly acclaimed Sundance winner “Swiss Army Man,” starring Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano. The company previously acquired North American rights and will release the film domestically on June 17 in New York and Los Angeles, with a nationwide expansion to follow on July 1.  The company now owns worldwide rights to the film and will partner with distributors and platforms to market and release the film globally. This is the first time A24 will handle international rights on a feature.
