Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran” has a stunning brand new trailer. The 1985 film is being presented for the first time in a 4K restoration and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on May 2.
The adaptation tells the story of an aging warlord who wants to divide his kingdom amongst his three sons. Jealously entails as the power-hungry siblings threaten to destroy the kingdom and their legacy. “Ran” has been a classic in film history, staging one of the most impressive battle sequences using over 1,000 extras, live horses and filming on location at ancient Japanese castles.
The beautifully restored version of the film was first premiered during last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The original was presented at the Tokyo Film Festival in 1895 and was applauded for its powerful images and use of color. Costume designer Emi Wada won an Oscar for Costume Design that following year.
The film is also being shown at limited theaters around the country on specific dates. Check out the impressive trailer above.
