The television special follows Richard Plantagenet (Cumberbatch) as he becomes the first Duke of York and fights his way to the English throne to become King Richard III. As seen in the trailer, this story will entail pure drama, passion and war.
“The Hollow Crown” also stars Judi Dench, Hugh Bonneville, Sophie Okonedo and Keeley Hawes and is directed by Dominic Cooke (“National Theatre Live: The Comedy of Errors”).
In an interview with Express, the director spoke highly of working with Benedict stating: “He’s very charming and sexy and compelling and funny and I think people are going to really enjoy it.” Adding that his performance “is extraordinary.”
The second series of “The Hollow Crown” consists of two-hour adaptations of the William Shakespeare plays “Henry VI Part 1,” “Henry VI Part 2” and “Richard III.” The “Doctor Strange” actor will appear in two parts of the trilogy.
“The Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses” premieres May 7 on BBC2.
