Kristen Stewart’s recent roles have taken her to much more subdued territory than the “Twilight” series, from the Alzheimer’s drama “Still Alice” to Olivier Assayas’ enigmatic “Clouds of Sils Maria.” Among K-Stew’s many, many upcoming roles is the lead in “Equals,” a new science-fiction romance from “Like Crazy” director Drake Doremus. Nicholas Hoult (“About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road”) stars opposite her as her forbidden inamorata. Indiewire has exclusively obtained new photos from the movie.
Though a genre picture, “Equals” is subdued by definition. It finds Stewart, Hoult, Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver in the sort of cold, sterile world we’ve become accustomed to in sci-fi narratives: Everyone wears white, the architecture is all grey and, most importantly, all emotions have been eradicated as a means of preventing crime and bringing about utopia. As with most would-be utopias, of course, there’s something foul afoot in the Collective.
