Lena Headey: ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Slammed My Acting ‘Because I Didn’t Get My T-ts Out’ During Finale

Lena Headey has one word for critics of last season’s “Game of Thrones” finale: shame. Well, she actually has a lot more to say in a new Entertainment Weekly interview held in advance of this Sunday’s season-six premiere, but the actress didn’t hold back from certain reactions to the much-discussed scene in which her character, Cersei Lannister, is forced to walk nude through the streets of King’s Landing by the Faith Militant. “Some people thought I was less of an actress because I didn’t get my t-ts out,” she said of the fact that a body double and inventive CGI were used to give the illusion.

Headey went on, adding that:

“You know what? It was really a bit shocking. I’ve done nudity. I’m not averse to it. But I know I’m a very emotional actor and I get really driven by that. In order to do my job, I allow myself to be really vulnerable. I don’t know any other way to do my job. Things really affect me. And the thought of being naked for three days and trying to contain her in the way she would be I think I would feel very angry. I didn’t want to be angry. I don’t think Cersei would be angry. I did what I thought she would do, emotionally.”

The show’s frequent sex and nudity (much of which is interlaced with violence) have become one of its most discussed aspects, not always for the better.

Mum is the word on season six; in a break from custom, television critics haven’t been given early access to episodes for review purposes. Headey doesn’t give away any plot details, but she does hype it up: “It just keep getting better. It’s so juicy, and it’s so f–king dark, and so emotionally clever, in this landscape. It sounds so cheesy, but I’m really grateful to be part of something so cherished.”
