Marvel and Netflix’s Upcoming Series ‘The Defenders’ to be Directed by ‘Daredevil’ Showrunners

Marvel and Netflix’s Upcoming Series ‘The Defenders’ to be Directed by ‘Daredevil’ Showrunners

Marvel and Netflix’s latest collaboration, “The Defenders,” has found its directors. “Daredevil” showrunners Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez are officially in charge of the upcoming miniseries, with Drew Goddard serving as executive producer.

The duo succeeded Goddard and Steven S. DeKnight after the first season of the Matt Murdock series. This new series includes superstar superheroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Details of the plot are still unknown, but “Defenders” will launch after each of the remaining superhero shows premiere.

“This is the big one. Four amazing casts, four amazing series, now all in one amazing story,” said Petrie and Ramirez. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to deliver the show that both we and the fans have been waiting for.”

“Daredevil” just released its second season, while Season 1 of “Jessica Jones” premiered in November. Luke Cage was seen in the Krysten Ritter-starring show "Jones," and his own series will launch on September 30. Production has started on “Iron Fist” with Finn Jones, but a premiere date has yet to be announced. What we do know is that according to Daredevil himself, Charlie Cox, filming on “The Defenders” will start at the end of this year.

Petrie and Ramirez told Indiewire last month that keeping details a secret and not being able to speak openly with the press about their work has been tough, “[We’re storytellers], then to come to these things, and want to sell the story, and to be as excited as we are to have worked on it, but then not be able to fully tell the story and talk about specifics is a little frustrating.”

And how secretive does Marvel ask their storytellers to be?

“Extremely. On the scale of secrecy stuff, it’s like the CIA, then Marvel,” Petrie replied, with Ramirez adding, “They take it really seriously. They take it more seriously than anybody I’ve ever worked with.”
