Mel Gibson to Write, Co-Star in Gold Rush TV Show with Kate Hudson & Kurt Russell

Today in “Yeah, I’ll probably watch that,” Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and Mel Gibson will star in “The Barbary Coast,” a TV adaptation of Herbert Asbury’s book of the same name about the 1849 gold rush. Hudson and Russell will star, with Gibson (who’s also co-writing, directing and executive producing) appearing in a recurring role. The show is being developed by the Mark Gordon Company (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and does not yet have a network or release date. If all goes well as they shop it around, however, “The Barbary Coast” could…strike gold. (Sorry.)

The book by Asbury, who also wrote “Gangs of New York,” tells of San Francisco’s early, brutal history, flashes of which were seen on “Deadwood.” The gold rush brought all types to the city, many of them unsavory: “Most people don’t know the scandalous history behind San Francisco, and ‘The Barbary Coast’ offers a rich portrayal of a period when success was often attained through illicit and brutal means,” said Gordon in a statement. “I’m excited that Kurt and Kate are working together alongside Mel, whose astute direction will bring this devious time in our history to life.”

The show marks all three actors’ first foray into television in some time, though Russell did recently appear in the period dramas “Bone Tomahawk” and “The Hateful Eight.” Depending on whether or not the actor has maintained his “Hateful Eight” beard, he may not even have to change his appearance for “The Barbary Coast.”
