If you don’t pay close attention to the Cannes Film Festival, it may come as a surprise to learn that the opera-singing alien from “The Fifth Element” has world-premiered several films there — and even won a major award. Maïwenn took home the Jury Prize (read: third place) for directing the police procedural “Polisse” in 2011 before receiving 13 César Award nominations the following year, while last year’s “Mon roi” netted Emmanuelle Bercot the festival’s Best Actress prize. Ahead of its theatrical release this summer, the film’s first trailer has now arrived.
Vincent Cassel co-stars in the movie, whose title translates to “My King.” Things start off happily in the romantic drama, with Bercot and Cassel meeting cute and having a child together before their relationship begins to sour. “Mon roi” received eight César nominations, including Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress.
Also in the cast are Louis Garrel, son of legendary French auteur Philippe Garrel, and Maïwenn’s younger sister Isild Le Besco. “Mon roi” is set to be released in the United States on July 15.
