Michelle McNamara, crime writer and wife of actor/comedian Patton Oswalt, died in her sleep on Thursday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 46.

The family’s publicist confirmed the news, not elaborating on the cause of death but adding that her passing “was a complete shock to her family and friends, who loved her dearly.”

McNamara was known for creating the True Crime Diary blog where she wrote about smaller-profile murder cases such as the Golden State Killer and the murder of nurse Melanie Howell that happened in 1976.

“It’s the ones that really don’t get that much attention that interest me because I think what’s interesting about them is there’s more stuff to be unearthed that hasn’t been in the public yet and you can do it,” she wrote.
