‘Rogue One’ Reveal: Mads Mikkelsen Is Playing Felicity Jones’ Father in Standalone ‘Star Wars’ Film

'Rogue One' Reveal: Mads Mikkelsen Is Playing Felicity Jones' Father in Standalone 'Star Wars' Film

Ancestry and parentage have been among the most important themes in “Star Wars” for as long as the series has existed. Finding out who his true father is nearly drives Luke Skywalker mad with grief in “The Empire Strikes Back”; not knowing who Rey’s parents are in “The Force Awakens” has led to rampant speculation since the film came out. Plot details regarding this year’s standalone “Rogue One” film are, of course, scarce, but co-star Mads Mikkelsen (“Casino Royale,” “The Hunt,” “Hannibal”) just semi-accidentally gave something away: He’s playing Jyn Erso’s (Felicity Jones) father.

“I can say absolutely nothing about it,” the Danish actor said of “Rogue One” during an interview with Kay Burley on Sky One before doing exactly that. “I can, but then I’d have to kill you and all the audience.” After being prompted to at least give away a teaser, Mikkelsen equivocated for a bit before calling the script “very beautiful;” then, with a clip of Jones playing in the background, he added that “Felicity’s playing this lovely, young, strong woman. I play her…father. And that was too much, I’m sorry.”

That’s all we’re getting out of him for now. After getting one scoop, Burley went for another: “You can tell us if Darth Vader’s in it as well, then,” she said. “Yes, I can,” he replied. “But I won’t.” Mikkelsen’s character doesn’t appear in the film’s trailer, and his name hasn’t been confirmed either — though he did add the name “Galen” to an autograph he signed last year. All will be revealed when “Rogue One” hits theaters on December 16.
