Scar Story

Logline: Paulette Leaphart is on a 1,000 mile topless walk from Biloxi, Mississippi to Washington DC to change the face of breast cancer.

Elevator Pitch:
In 2014, Paulette had a double mastectomy and no reconstruction. She is 49, a mother of eight children, living in New Orleans. After a year of chemo, she came out of the woods and found herself totally alienated by the ‘culture’ around breast cancer. In an effort to augment the popular pink imagery, she began to walk around topless, casually displaying her mastectomy scars. The effect was powerful. She’s developed a significant Facebook following and has decided to take the message on the road. This spring, Paulette will embark on a 1,000 mile topless journey to Washington DC.

Production Team:
Director: Emily MacKenzie
Producer: Sasha Solodukhina
Director of Photography: Justin Zweifach
Editors: Mariah Rehmet, Janis Vogle

About the Film:
We met Paulette serendipitously, while she was on a training walk in the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. She shared her story and immediately we were mesmerized – we filmed the teaser with her in October and are now gearing up to join her on the 1,000 mile journey. Paulette is bold and brave and feels like the best way she can change the discourse around breast cancer is by doing this walk, and we are hoping to get the word out about her incredibly and powerful journey.

Current Status: We just launched our Kickstarter to get us on the road!
