Scott Tobias Joins Oscilloscope as Editor of Musings

The launch last July of Oscilloscope’s Musings was inspired by the demise of The Dissolve, so it only makes sense that not quite 10 months later, that former Dissolve editor Scott Tobias has been named the editor of Musings. Tobias, who penned Musings’ inaugural essay on Leonard Kastle’s “The Honeymoon Killers,” has been writing for places like the New York Times, Vulture, and the Washington Post, and will continue, since as he explained on Twitter, the position is “a passion project” and not a full-time gig. According to the press release, under Tobias’ guidance, Musings’ sporadic offerings “become more robust and varied… with the aim of expanding readership while maintaining consistently fresh, focused, and unique content.” With recent posts on the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” sequel, “Shock Treatment,” and the career of screenwriter Samuel Raphaelson, it’s clear Musings isn’t chasing the same audience as most other film sites but establishing one of its own, and under Tobias’ guidance, it’s likely to do that in spades

The complete release follows.

Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that revered film writer Scott Tobias will come aboard to assume
editorial duties for their MUSINGS satellite site, effective
immediately. Since its inception in July 2015,
MUSINGS has been a home for smart, eclectic writing on film. Wholly
creations of their respective writers, the pieces have ranged in theme
and tone, with subjects as diverse as the allure of Bruce Willis,
Richard Hell’s devotion to The Wizard of Oz, a three-part history of RKO Pictures, and a side-by-side comparison of Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth and The Godfather. Recently, the blog has traveled to the printed page, in a zine-like version printed bi-monthly.

As
a writer and film editor of The A.V. Club and The Dissolve for over 16
years, Tobias brings a wealth of experience to the position. Under
Tobias’s leadership, MUSINGS will become more robust and varied. He
will curate the content on the site — taking pitches and commissioning
new pieces — with the aim of expanding readership while maintaining
consistently fresh, focused, and unique content.

About the new position, Scott Tobias said, “Back when my previous publication, The Dissolve, folded in early July of last year, [O-Scope president] Dan [Berger] was one of the first
people to reach out and propose a new home for the type of smart,
passionate, accessible film writing that we liked to champion on the
site. It has been a pleasure, as a contributor and a reader, to see
MUSINGS fulfill that mission and become a valued destination for people
who love watching and thinking about movies. My goal is to continue
building on the site’s success by giving great writers the opportunity
to follow their sensibilities and offer the types of film essays and
features that won’t be found anywhere else on the web.”

O-Scope’s
Dan Berger said, “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Scott working
with us to refine and better something that we feel very passionate
about. We’re extremely fortunate to be in a position to present these
Musings to people and with Scott’s input and direction, I expect we’ll
have even better Good Shit for people to read in the future.”
